Before Hiring ALWAYS chat with the candidate, there is no other way to find out whether your potential writer can actually write or not. Do trial periods as well, it a great way to find out if the freelancer is a committed worker and can meet deadlines. Also, (THIS is DEFINITELY going to come across as sexist) I myself prefer hiring females (Especially if I am hiring from a non-native region) they tend to be more reliable and (sometimes) write better too!
