Cold Calling vs. Warm Calling??

I have found a new term "Warm Calling" in the internet and I have also find that there some basic difference between Cold calling and Warm calling.
After Searching In the Internet, I have found that
Cold Calling is the process of making an uninvited call to customers to sell products or services.
Warm Calling is the process of making call to a potential customer with whom business has had prior contact.
I am not sure, what are the basic difference between Cold calling and Warm Calling? Also Which one is more effective for getting clients?
